With summer holidays fast approaching, it is time to start thinking about what summer babywearing options we might need to start implementing and different tools to help handle the heat. Here are my top tips for babywearing in warm weather.
Invest in a carrier with breathable fabric. There are a number of different options on the market that fit this criteria, whether it is a carrier constructed from a single layer of breathable natural fibres, a light weight woven wrap or ring sling, or a carrier designed with a breathable mesh panel there will be a breathable carrier available in your prefered style.
As the fabric of the carrier covers most, if not all of your child's torso, having a fabric that allows for air flow will keep them much more comfortable in the carrier.
My personal favourite for summer strolls is a ring sling, as it can comfortably carry a newborn or a preschooler! For longer walks where you want a bit more support I love a Beco Eight or Beco Toddler Cool Mesh.
Portable shade is a must. Think wide brimmed hats and umbrellas to use as parasols.
I prefer to wear an extra wide hat myself, rather than putting a hat on baby. This means I can still see their nose and mouth easily, which is made a bit more difficult if bubs is wearing a hat themselves.
To protect bubs extremities from the sun, cool cotton clothing, sunscreen, or a muslin tucked into the carrier to drape over their legs works well.
Just remember if you are using a cloth for shade, you want to still be able to see baby's face at all times and ensure that they get a constant supply of fresh air, so never cover their face.
Less is more. Choosing carrying options with less fabric layers over baby and less across your sides. For summer time I like onbuhimo and ring sling carrys the best. There is not as much fabric covering your sides, there is not a hot waistband to contend with, and carrying your child on your back or hip (if they have reached the appropriate milestones to do so safely in your carrier) is much cooler than having them on your front.
Remember - your carrier is considered a layer of clothing, so take this into consideration when you are deciding how to dress bubs on warm days

And a couple of bonus tips for you -
- Using a newspaper or magazine as a fan helps when there is no breeze.
- A damp cloth draped over your neck can stop you from overheating.
- Don't forget to hydrate!
